How To Setup The HomeSafe; Safety Technology; SafeFamilyLife; Or StreetWise Barking Watch Dog Alarm

Electronic Barking Dog Alarm, Remote Control, And Bark GraphicUpdated 05-25-2023

The Barking Dog Alarm Enhanced Setup Instructions

Setup of Barking Dog Alarm brands Safety Technology & Safe Family Life model EWD-1, HomeSafe model 639SR, or StreetWise model SWEWD is a simple process once you are familiar with the unit. Please study these instructions, as this Main Unit is very sensitive and may need to be adjusted and moved as little as a few inches to reach the desired first-time results.

We have provided setup instructions in two parts. In part one; we have included basic setup instructions and considerations for placement of the Main Unit. In part two we have included the process to expand the basic alarm unit by adding Motion Sensors, Remote Controls, and Door/Window Vibration sensors. Please DO NOT move on to part two until part one is completed.

PART ONE:

Barking Dog Alarm And Remote Reversed

How To Setup The Main Unit:

Barking Dog Alarm Battery Door Graphic12 Volt Port plug

To start the setup, you need to install 8 AA-size batteries so the unit can operate properly and supply backup in case of a power failure. Plugin the AC to 12 volt DC adaptor to the main unit DC power port (Fig.5).

Install the fresh included battery in the Remote Control.

Barking Dog Alarm FIG A-D Drawing Setup Around Metal

The Main Unit should be placed 2.5 to 5 feet from the floor with the battery side facing the object you want to detect through. The speaker side faces inside the room where the sound will fill the area and bounce off of the walls for a realistic sound from the outside. Fig A; B; C; and D show the right and wrong way to place the alarm around a door if it is made of metal. Notice that the alarm Main Unit is angled toward the outside of the door to improve the angle of detection.

Barking Dog Alarm Wall Mount Battery Side To The Wall

The Main Unit can also be mounted on the wall 2.5 to about 6 feet from the floor and away from heat sources.  Figures E and F show a wall mount with the broken lines showing a typical area of detection.

All of the Barking Dog Alarm Main Units mentioned in these instructions are identical with the exception of the brand name and model. They are designed to detect through wood, glass, brick, plastic, and other barriers.  During setup, keep in mind that the Main Unit will NOT detect through metal and there may be reduced or no penetration through ultra-thick barriers: objects that contain rebar, metal window coatings, chicken wire, and any other metal that is hidden in the wall. If you have an issue, adding an outdoor adjustable motion sensor should get around the problem.

The Radar Wave/Microwave sensor is very sensitive and just like a real dog, when armed, it will activate at anything that it drtects moving, including plant leaves, heavy rain, large insects, computer fans, and curtains. The sensor will see movement from all sides however, only the Battery Side is designed to detect through objects. The other sides have a reduced range and may activate the unit when you get close to it.

Barking Dog Alarm Switches

When set to bark, the Main Unit will give warning barks if it sees motion. If the motion continues the barking will get more vicious until the main unit no longer sees movement.

The main unit will work best if it can continuously see a person as they walk toward it. (The main unit can also be set to chime or siren.)

Barking Dog Alarm Volume and Sensitivity Controls

The Main Unit sensitivity control can be used to set the distance that the barking dog alarm will pick up movement. This maximum distance of this control depends on the object that the sensor is trying to detect through. Keep in mind that the higher the sensitivity is set, the more movement it will see. You may also need to move the main unit if you are not getting the desired trigger. Even a few inches can make a difference.

The Main Unit off/on volume control is used to power on the unit and set the desired volume of the chosen setting of bark, siren, or chime.

After selecting the location to place the Barking Dog Main Unit, you will want to test the range and loudness of the alarm. For first-time power-up of the main unit, it is recommended that the chime mode be used.

Turn on the power by turning the power/volume adjustment switch (fig.1).  The Power/Battery low LED on the front of the Main Unit should glow green and the Arm LED may glow red indicating the alarm is armed.

*Note If you do not see the green LED, after you turn on your Main Unit, you are running on the batteries. Be sure the adapter is plugged into AC power and the Alarm Unit DC port. If the Arm LED is not glowing red, either press the Arm/Disarm button on side of the Main Unit or press the arm button on the Remote Control.

When Arming: In Bark mode you should hear a short bark, in Chime mode, you will hear a ding dong, and in Alarm Siren mode, you should hear a beep. The alarm will then set up in about 60 seconds sounding a short beep. The Main Unit will now ready to protect your selected area.

Test the alarm by walking through the area to be protected. Use the Sensitivity Adjustment to set the desired range of the Main Unit and the Volume Adjustment to set the desired sound level.

IN BARK MODE:

When motion is detected it will cause the alarm to trigger. You will hear a short bark and another if detection continues twice in five seconds. The Main Unit will continue barking for about ten seconds with more than two motion detections within five seconds. If detection continues, or there is a trigger from an add-on sensor, Barking will be at its most vicious (see part Two of this article for setting up add-on sensors). Barking will continue for ten seconds after motion is no longer detected.

IN CHIME MODE:

There will be a ding dong sound for each motion trigger, or add on sensor motion detection.

IN ALARM SIREN MODE:

The Main Unit will sound a 3 second siren alarm when it detects one trigger in 5 seconds. If there are two detections within five seconds, the alarm will sound for 6 seconds. If detection continues, or there is a trigger from an add-on sensor (see part Two of this article for setting up add-on sensors), the alarm will continue to sound and reset 20 seconds after motion is no longer detected.

TO DISARM THE SYSTEM:

Press the ARM/DISARM button on the Main Unit, or press the DISARM button once on the Remote Control. The arm LED will go out and there should be a short beep.

HomeSafe Remote No BackGround copy

THE REMOTE CONTROL PANIC BUTTON:

The Panic Button on the Remote Control will sound a siren alarm for 20 seconds when pressed.

THE MAIN UNIT LOW BATTERY INDICATOR:

When the unit is plugged into home power and the Power/Battery low LED glows amber, it is time to change to a new set of AA Backup Batteries. Failure to do so may cause false triggers of the alarm Main Unit or failure of the alarm to detect if there is a power loss.

The Main Unit includes one Remote Control that has been matched to the Main Unit Alarm at the factory. If you have a need to get around metal, or you plan to purchase Add On Motion Sensors, Door/Window Sensors, or extra Remote Controls, please read PART TWO for instructions to match them to the Barking Dog Main Unit and for setup instructions.

    1. For Security Sake

When setting up the barking dog alarm to detect through glass, consider the following. The Barking Dog Cannot see through metal. Some glass coatings are metal based and many screens are made of metal. Also if the glass gets bright direct sunlight, this may affect the ability of the sensor. If you are having trouble getting the unit to detect through glass, I would suggest either moving the Barking Dog Alarm to a wall near the glass or add an outdoor motion sensor to the system. The outdoor motion sensor mounts outside and will send a signal to the Barking Dog Alarm.

    1. For Security Sake

It is hard to reply to this as there isn’t much information in your post.

I can only answer to the Safety Technology, HomeSafe, Safe Family Life, and Streetwise barking dog alarms, which have about one minute to setup when you arm them. After the alarm sets up, it will bark at anything that moves until it no longer sees movement. Anything means AC moving drapes near it, heat sources that are to close, and plants moving in the breeze.

If your talking about the add on sensor(s) they will cause the above mentioned alarms to bark immediately after the above mentioned setup if they see movement and will continue until they no longer see movement.

The main difference to the Main unit and the add on sensors is that the main unit will give a warning bark and get more vicious as movement continues. When an add on sensor is triggered, it will cause the main unit to bark viciously immediately.

    1. Thank you for your question Lowell Franklin,

The main unit would need to be protected as it is not weatherproof. Weather damage would void the warranty.

The way that the system is designed relies on barking sounds bouncing off room walls to make it sound realistic from the outside. Some customers place the unit in a dog house to protect it and to help with the realistic sound.

The optional outdoor adjustable motion sensor is weather resistant and will trigger the main unit to bark, however no barking sounds come from the sensor itself.

I hope this helps answer your question.

  1. Dear Zeb, It has been a long time since I purchased Street Wise Barking Dog and motion detectors I from you. I have been very pleased with the performance of the Barking Dog, the remote sensors, and the great customer service I received at that time.
I now need to review the instructions for resetting up remote motion sensors with the main barking dog and remembered your www and the instructions available. I spent the time necessary to find YOU and not just another sale person because of the great service I received before. I will come back to you for future purchases. Your customer service does pay off.

  2. Hi Love the unit, one problem though, installed all new batteries and after a few days the red low battery light keeps flashing even though is always plug in to the main power? it is never running on battery alone, any advice please.

    1. Thank you for your question to ForSecuritySake.com

Here a couple of suggestions for the EWD-1 main unit:

Make sure the wall power plug is working and not controlled by a light switch. The batteries are for use in case of a home power failure. If the unit is left to run on batteries alone it will deplete the batteries in a few days.

The main unit will work without batteries installed while plugged into your building power. Try using the unit without batteries to test that the main unit’s power supply is working.
